Recently I have met up with people who have called upon me for advice about bike touring, travel advice -and whatever else they get from me as an added bonus ;) . I have had some positive feedback from these meetings and I have also got a lot out of them myself.
I would like to extend this invitation to anyone who might be planning a bike trip or adventure-related project or fancies a chat about anything I've been writing on this blog. I would be happy to meet up.
By definition the internet is a 'distancing' technology. To an extent it replaces certain situations where people may have previously met up. Instead of communication by voice, I send a text or write an email. Seeing as the majority percentage of communication is none verbal I really believe in the importance of using technology for communication where it's appropriate but no more.
I have the feeling that the internet is attributing in part to an increasingly 'alienated' general public. The result of this, is that people are spending time alone, and creating ever less realistic lifestyles based on various layers of fictitious 'meaning', creating dual identities and existences (take for example Facebook or the Second Life online game). It's possible to have one persona in real life and another one online.
I don't understand the consequences of this but I don't see it as a particularly healthy trendy at a time when the opposite should be happening and people should be becoming more aware of their interaction with the natural world and coming together with other people to become active agents of change towards a more sustainable future (See Paul Ruskin and the GSG).
So, to bring it back to my point. If you would like to meet up, please call +447973303500 or email andy@ride-earth.org.uk. I'm currently living in S.E.London.
