Possible future adventures

I am always brewing new ideas for adventures even though recently I have become city-bound in London. I know that if I don't capture these ideas and plan for the future they won't come to bear, because I will have to set a date for them to happen in the future. Since I have done some travelling now and got a bit of experience some of my wanderlust has, shall we say, become more focused. I no longer feel that to not travel every country in the world before my death would be disappointing in the sense that there is an opportunity cost of doing anything because of our limited life spans; Average life expectancy data for UK.

A list of potential adventures which I have been considering :-

Far-afield adventures

  • Sail somewhere  (potentially build / refurbish boat) with friends Tom and Ben

  • Mountain bike the Great Divide mountain bike route

  • Travel by bike and on foot in South America collecting audio comme David Byrne

  • Cycle to Scandanavia and do an extended cross country ski trip

  • Foot / cycle in North West Africa and visit the proper desert

  • Mountain biking in Canada

  • Mountain biking in Georgia

  • Walk in Iran

  • Eat delicious food in S.East Asia

  • Be like Robinson Crusoe on a desert island

London-bound adventures

  • Weekender down to Brighton by bike

  • Weekender over to Amsterdam by bike

  • Catch the train outside of London for a mountain bike ride - e.g. Aston Hill

  • Psychogeographic city exploration and documentation

  • Night cycling in the city

  • Exploring the city's parks for mountain biking / running

  • Rowing / swimming in the various lakes / lidos / Thames (need more convincing on this one- swimming that is- need to get some motivation from Dan Martin.)

  • GPS games in the city

Activities I want to do other than cycling

  • Rowing

  • Swimming

  • Sailing

  • Walking

  • Windsurfing (hmm.... windsurf along the Atlantic coastline of France and Spain)

  • Human powered vehicle (other than bike)

  • Alternative type of bike - e.g. recumbent, trike or tandem

  • Ski / polar

  • Kite surfing

  2. I found out in one of my recent lectures that sitting down to come up with ideas is much more difficult than 'collecting' them at the time they come to you. More reason to carry a notebook around. I am surprised more people don't do it. It's the only way I remember important stuff!

  3. Hi Mark, I think your walk in Iran is partly inspiring that one. Also when I went there I wish I had spent more time to go off the beaten track rather than rushing through towards India. I met some guys crossing the border from Georgia to Turkey who had been walking in the Zagros. I've got a good friend in Tehran who I really want to go over and meet who's really into his biking and stuff. If I'm over that way then I will certainly be in touch.
